New Zealand's first rock 'n' roll recording was made in Wellington in 1955, a fact that quietly signals how central this city has been to the country's musical identity. Today, that restless energy persists across a dense network of active venues: San Fran hosts free weekly gigs through its Eyegum Wednesdays programme, Valhalla anchors the metal and hardcore circuit, and the Rogue & Vagabond keeps jazz nights running alongside its sister bar Bedlam & Squalor. The city has its own unofficial genre, the Wellington Sound, built around jazz and rock-influenced roots, reggae, soul, and hip-hop, a template shaped by bands like Fat Freddy's Drop and The Black Seeds, both formed here. With the Wellington Town Hall set to reopen in 2027 as home to the National Music Centre, the city's relationship with live music is far from nostalgic.
