From punk icons Teenage Head to modern rock ambassadors the Arkells, Hamilton, Ontario has produced a remarkable breadth of artists across nearly a century of recorded music history. The city's industrial character shaped a punk and rock scene with genuine grit, while independent label Sonic Unyon Records, founded here in 1993, cemented Hamilton's reputation as a city that builds its own infrastructure rather than waiting for outside validation. That same spirit drives Supercrawl, the free annual festival Sonic Unyon launched in 2009, which transforms James Street North into one of Canada's most celebrated music and arts gatherings. For live shows on any given night, venues like the Casbah, Bridgeworks, and the Corktown Pub, which has hosted live music for over 90 years, offer a range of rooms and formats that few cities of Hamilton's size can match.
