Flying Nun Records, New Zealand's most celebrated independent label, was founded in Christchurch in 1981, making the city central to the jangle-pop and lo-fi guitar sound that defined a generation of New Zealand rock. That founding impulse, rooted in local DIY culture and the early punk scenes of the late 1970s, produced artists including The Bats, Bailterspace, and Dance Exponents, alongside later acts like Bic Runga and Scribe. Today the city's live infrastructure is anchored by venues including The Assembly on Madras Street, Blue Smoke in the Woolston Tannery precinct, and The Loons in Lyttelton, a historic building repurposed as a performance space. The 2010-2011 earthquakes forced a significant restructuring of the scene, but what emerged is a circuit built around community-minded spaces, with the restored Christchurch Town Hall, reopened in 2019, confirming the city's continued commitment to live performance.
