Few cities of Dunedin's size have shaped a genre as completely as this southern New Zealand city did in the early 1980s. The Dunedin Sound, built on jangly guitar work, lo-fi psychedelia, and a nervous post-punk edge, crystallised around bands like The Clean, The Chills, The Verlaines, and Sneaky Feelings, with The Clean's 1981 single "Tally Ho!" and the 1982 "Dunedin Double" EP marking its arrival on a national stage. That collaborative, DIY spirit, partly born from geographic isolation and limited studio access, continues to shape how the city makes and shares music. Today, venues ranging from the intimate Inch Bar and Dog With Two Tails to the well-equipped Dive and the larger Forsyth Barr Stadium keep live performance central to local life, supported by homegrown labels like Fishrider Records still operating from within the city.
