Blues runs deeper in Toruń than most Polish cities its size. Jan "Junou" Janowski, who formed Irjan, the first Polish blues band, studied here, and Ryszard "Skiba" Skibiński, leader of the legendary Kasa Chorych, was born in the city. That lineage continues through two active local blues groups, Nocna Zmiana Bluesa and Tortilla, and the Toruń Blues Meeting festival, which has been running since 1990 and is known for its late-night jam sessions. The city also produced Republika, one of the most influential Polish rock bands of the 1980s, and more recently Organek, an alternative rock act whose frontman Tomasz Organek studied at Nicolaus Copernicus University here. For live music today, Od Nowa, a club operating since 1958, and Tutu Whiskey & Jazz Club anchor a scene that stretches from Klub Wehikuł Czasu for heavy rock to CKK Jordanki for orchestral work.
