Few Polish cities can claim to have shaped an entire genre, but Bydgoszcz is where the yass movement took form, with Trytony's 1992 album "Dances of Bydgoszcz" standing as the genre's founding document. That experimental instinct still runs through the city's live circuit today, from the avant-garde programming at MÓZG, housed in a former factory, to the jazz and blues atmosphere of ELJazz in a converted distillery. Classical music carries equal weight here, anchored by the internationally respected Pomeranian Philharmonic Hall and its triennial I.J. Paderewski Piano Competition, while Opera Nova on the Brda River draws top soloists year-round. Rock, alternative, metal, and a clutch of active electronic record labels round out a scene that has been accumulating serious credentials since the 1980s without much need for outside validation.
