A UNESCO City of Music with two of Brazil's most influential genres to its name, Recife carries serious musical weight. Frevo, the frenetic carnival style recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and Afro-Brazilian maracatu both trace their roots here, and both remain living, performed traditions rather than museum pieces. In the early 1990s, Chico Science and Nação Zumbi pushed the city's sound outward with Manguebeat, fusing maracatu, coco, and ciranda with rock, funk, and hip hop in a way that reshaped Brazilian music broadly. That restless instinct for cross-genre collision still runs through the live scene today, from the bohemian rock and blues nights at Bar Burburinho to the wider programming at Teatro de Santa Isabel, which moves between traditional frevo and electronic beats in a single season. Abril Pro Rock, Brazil's first independent music festival, is held here every year.
