The city that produced both Milton Nascimento and Sepultura tells you everything you need to know about the range of Belo Horizonte's musical ambitions. The Clube da Esquina movement, which fused jazz, rock, classical music, and Brazilian rhythms in the 1960s, remains the city's most internationally recognized cultural contribution, while Cogumelo Records, founded here in 1980, helped launch Brazilian extreme metal onto the world stage by releasing Sepultura's debut album. On any given night, that breadth translates into a live scene stretching from choro sessions at Pedacinhos do Céu and samba in the Santa Tereza neighborhood to heavy metal at Autêntica and major touring acts at BeFly Hall or Mineirão Stadium. The city reportedly has more bars per capita than any other in the hemisphere, and a significant share of them have a band on the floor.
