Few Polish cities carry as much weight in the history of alternative music as Jarocin, where the annual rock festival became one of the most politically significant musical events in the Eastern Bloc. Through the 1980s, the festival served as a rare space for uncensored expression under Communist rule, launching the careers of bands like Dżem, Kult, Dezerter, Armia, and Acid Drinkers, and cementing punk rock, heavy metal, and rock as the dominant voices of Polish youth rebellion. That history is now permanently housed at the Granary of Polish Rock Music, which functions as both a museum and an active concert venue. The current live scene extends across several active spaces including Kontrapunkt, JOK Jarocin, and Kamienica Kultury, giving the city a present-tense music culture that remains anchored to the defiant spirit the festival built.
