Silverchair put Newcastle on the global map in the 1990s, and the city has been generating serious musical credibility ever since. The grunge legacy those three local teenagers ignited is now being carried forward by a new generation, with teenage bands like PIT leading a recognisable resurgence of the sound in the city's venues. That scene sits alongside Newcastle NSW Indie, a locally named genre built on acoustic instruments, electronic elements, and a DIY self-releasing ethos that remains very much alive today. On any given weekend, that energy moves through a circuit of active rooms: the Lass O'Gowrie Hotel backing local talent, the King Street Hotel running live music and DJ sets nightly, the Stag and Hunter hosting touring acts, and the Rogue Scholar putting on shows four nights a week. For a city of its size, Newcastle's live music infrastructure is genuinely difficult to match.
