In the 1990s, Halifax punched well above its weight, sending Sloan, Thrush Hermit, and The Super Friendz onto international stages and earning the city the nickname "Seattle of the North." That momentum never really stopped. Today, Celtic sessions run nightly at Durty Nelly's and The Old Triangle, the Marquee Ballroom anchors the North End for larger touring acts, and The Lower Deck keeps the waterfront loud seven nights a week. The Halifax Pop Explosion festival, running since 1993, continues to connect local talent with global industry attention, while the TD Halifax Jazz Festival holds its place as the oldest and largest summer jazz festival in Atlantic Canada. With Sarah McLachlan born here and April Wine formed here in 1969, the city has a long habit of producing artists who leave a mark far beyond Nova Scotia.
