Flamenco runs deeper here than almost anywhere else in Spain. The Sacromonte neighborhood, where Gypsy, Moorish, and Jewish traditions converged in cave dwellings, gave rise to the zambra and cante jondo styles that still define the city's musical identity. That lineage is very much alive: Peña Flamenca La Platería, founded in 1949 and recognised as the world's oldest peña flamenca, hosts weekly performances, while venues like Jardines de Zoraya and La Chumbera keep the tradition vital. Granada also has serious rock credentials, with influential bands including Los Planetas, Lagartija Nick, and Lori Meyers all originating here. The International Festival of Music and Dance, held each summer in venues including the Alhambra's Palace of Charles V, has drawn audiences since its 19th-century roots. For a city of its size, the range and depth of live music Granada produces is genuinely striking.
