Known as the Country Music Capital of Canada, Calgary has produced a striking range of artists across genres, from Tegan and Sara's indie-pop to Feist's art-folk, Jann Arden's confessional rock, and the industrial force of Skinny Puppy's Nivek Ogre. That breadth is no accident. The city developed a recognizable approach to independent music, locally described as Calgary Indie, defined by a DIY community spirit that mixes folk, punk, rock, and electronic influences. Live music here runs from the intimate Ironwood Stage and Grill, which hosts acts every night, to the restored King Eddy, a blues institution reopened in 2018 beside Studio Bell and the National Music Centre. A stretch from the East Village to Inglewood, known as the Music Mile, concentrates more than 20 venues in a single corridor and remains the operating heart of the city's scene.
