Pop singer Sigrid and jazz guitarist Hedvig Mollestad Thomassen both trace their roots to Ålesund, a coastal Norwegian city that has quietly produced a disproportionate number of serious working musicians. The live scene today ranges from the concert halls of Terminalen Byscene and Parken kulturhus, which book established acts including Nazareth and Åge Sten Nilsen in 2026, to smaller nightly spots like Happy Elefante and Brooklyn Bar, where live music runs through the week. The Ålesund Symphonic Orchestra, founded in 1945, anchors the city's more formal programming with seven to ten concerts a year spanning classical, film, and pop repertoire. Out on the nearby island of Giske, Sommerfesten has drawn crowds of up to 30,000 since 2008, built on a deliberately non-commercial ethos. Compact as it is, the city covers a lot of musical ground.
