Founded in 1971 by two high school students, the Roskilde Festival has grown into the largest music festival in the Nordic countries and one of the most significant in Europe, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors to this Danish city each year. What began as a modest gathering of folk, jazz, rock, and pop acts has expanded across decades to encompass metal, hip hop, electronica, world music, and experimental genres, with the iconic Orange Stage serving as its centrepiece and a genuine career milestone for artists who perform on it. Beyond the festival grounds, the city sustains a year-round live music culture through Gimle, an active cultural venue running concerts, open mic nights, and summer performances in Roskilde Bypark. Smaller in scale but consistent in programming, Gimle represents the infrastructure that keeps the city's music life functioning outside the one week each summer that puts Roskilde on the global map.
