Born in Poole's Parkstone district, Greg Lake went on to co-found King Crimson and Emerson, Lake & Palmer, giving this Dorset town a direct line to the progressive rock canon. That connection aside, Poole's current live music offering is built on range rather than a single defining sound. Lighthouse Poole anchors the cultural end of the spectrum as a multi-arts venue hosting international acts, while SoundCellar draws dedicated audiences for jazz and world music. HonkyTonk Collective brings live country and line dancing to the town, and The Newtown Social Club runs regular Friday nights for local bands. Poole's music history carries genuine weight too, with the former Poole Arts Centre hosting U2 in 1983, The Smiths in 1985, and a Kate Bush warm-up show before her UK tour, all at the same venue now operating as Lighthouse Poole.
