Long before most cities had a live music scene worth speaking of, Motala was already transmitting sound across Sweden. The 1927 Motala longwave broadcasting station, once known by the call "Stockholm-Motala," helped establish radio as a national medium, and the Luxor company, founded here, grew into one of Sweden's largest manufacturers of radios and televisions. That legacy of audio technology runs deep in the city's identity. Today, live music finds its home across a handful of active venues: Folkets Hus hosts concerts and events, Bomber Bar programmes live performances, and Lokverkstan anchors the outdoor concert series Musik vid Göta Kanal. The Swedish Broadcasting Museum, with its twin radio towers, serves as a permanent reminder that Motala's relationship with sound is not incidental. For a smaller city, it carries genuine historical weight in the story of how Sweden heard music.
