Few Belgian cities carry a musical legacy as deep as Mons. In the 15th and 16th centuries, it stood at the heart of the Franco-Flemish polyphonic tradition, producing composers including Gilles Binchois and Orlande de Lassus, figures whose influence spread across the courts of Europe. That classical gravity still shapes the city today, with the Théâtre Royal de Mons and the Musica Mundi School keeping formal performance central to the calendar. But Mons runs wider than that. Le Manège hosts contemporary acts, the area around Marché aux Herbes Square sustains a nightly mix of hardcore, rap, and R&B, and the Gare de Mons open-air site has drawn major electronic acts including Sven Väth. The annual Ducasse de Mons, a UNESCO-listed folklore event, folds concerts into its festivities each spring, giving the city one of the more distinctive live music calendars in Wallonia.
