Baroque music runs deep in Magdeburg, the capital of Saxony-Anhalt and the birthplace of Georg Philipp Telemann, one of the most prolific composers of the Baroque era. That legacy is kept alive through the Magdeburger Telemann-Festtage, a biennial festival founded in 1962 that has grown into one of Europe's premier early music events, drawing international ensembles to historic venues across the city. On the contemporary side, Magdeburg is the city that produced Tokio Hotel, the pop rock and alternative rock band formed in 2001 whose four teenage members went on to achieve international recognition. For live music today, the city offers everything from large-scale shows at the GETEC Arena and outdoor concerts at Domplatz Open Air to more intimate performances at AMO Kulturhaus and the Pianobar, giving the scene a genuine range across genres and settings.
