Once regarded as the reggae and sound system capital of northern England, Huddersfield built its musical identity through the West Indian Windrush communities who arrived in the 1960s, establishing a scene so significant that the Venn Street club became a proving ground for international reggae stars fresh from Jamaica. That bass-heavy lineage runs directly into the city's current association with bassline and drum and bass. Today, the live scene is anchored by The Parish, now operating from the Old Courthouse on Queen Street with over a thousand gigs across genres to its name, alongside the newly launched AMPED on Zetland Street, which focuses on emerging artists. For larger shows, Accu Stadium has drawn the likes of Bon Jovi, Elton John, and R.E.M. The city has also produced artists spanning thrash metal, indie, and classical traditions, confirming a musical range that extends well beyond any single genre.
