Innocent Hengelo has earned the nickname "CBGB's of Europe" from those who know it, which tells you something about how seriously this small Dutch city takes its live music. Anchoring the eastern Netherlands alongside Metropool Poppodia van Twente, a major regional pop venue hosting concerts and club nights across Hengelo, Enschede, and Almelo, the city punches above its weight on the touring circuit. The Canadian rock band The Tragically Hip name-checked a Metropool performance in their song "At the Hundredth Meridian," and British indie band Spring Offensive dedicated a track to the city entirely. Locally, the garage rock outfit The Fundogs have been a fixture since 1986, while PopEye, reportedly the oldest record shop in the east of the Netherlands, draws collectors from across Europe. The annual BernArt en Music festival in Prins Bernhard park adds an outdoor dimension to a scene that has quietly built a serious reputation.
