Live Music in Halifax

In the early 1990s, Halifax earned the nickname "Seattle of the North" as acts like Sloan, Thrush Hermit, Jale, and Plumtree built a self-sustaining alternative rock scene that drew serious attention from labels including Sub Pop. That momentum produced the Halifax Pop Explosion festival, which ran from 1993 through 2021 and helped define the city's identity as a serious music hub. Today, that reputation is backed by a network of working venues, from the intimate Carleton and the blues-focused Bearly's House of Blues and Ribs to the concert rooms at the Marquee Ballroom and the 10,500-seat Scotiabank Centre. Celtic sessions run nightly at spots like Durty Nelly's and The Old Triangle, while the TD Halifax Jazz Festival draws major crowds to the waterfront every July, cementing Halifax as one of the most musically active cities in Atlantic Canada.
