Few cities compress so many musical worlds into a single skyline. Dubai's live scene runs from the traditional Arabic sounds of the oud and qanun through to the electronic music culture shaped by Raisini Records, the city's first independent dance music label, founded in 2003 and credited with introducing house and techno across the wider Middle East. Homegrown acts like Nervecell, who tour internationally, and The Fridge, the UAE's first all-female Emirati band, sit alongside a jazz circuit anchored by venues such as Q's Bar and Lounge, the only jazz club bearing Quincy Jones's name, and Jazz at PizzaExpress, which runs live performances seven nights a week. Annual events like the Dubai Jazz Festival and RedFestDXB draw major international talent, while a crop of independent electronic labels including Granular Music and KitchenSync Records confirms the city is producing, not just importing, its own sounds.
