Jazz runs deeper in Dover than most port towns its size. Ray Doble's 500 Jazz Club, established at the Red Cow in 1954, helped cement the genre's grip on the town, and that connection persists today at Vinoteq Wine Bar, where jazz remains central to the cellar bar's identity, and at the Louis Armstrong pub, renamed in 1971 as a tribute to the genre's hold on local culture. The Booking Hall, housed in the old harbor buildings, now anchors the contemporary live scene with regular concerts and events, while The Art Club offers two stages for emerging artists across genres. Dover also has a notable birthplace claim: soul singer Joss Stone was born here, at Buckland Hospital. For a town better known for its cliffs and ferries, its live music infrastructure is more substantive than most visitors expect.
