Melkweg
Housed in a former 19th-century dairy factory, Melkweg is a renowned multi-disciplinary cultural center in Amsterdam. Its historic industrial building, originally a sugar refinery then a milk factory, was reopened as a temporary cultural center in 1970 and became permanent in 1973. Melkweg offers a diverse program across five artistic disciplines: music, dance/theatre, film, photography, and media art. Musically, it features pop, electronic, rock, punk, metal, hip-hop, alternative, and world genres, hosting concerts and club nights. Beyond performances, it includes parties, meetings, and youth programs. Melkweg is known for its multidisciplinary approach, serving as a launchpad for emerging artists and hosting established names early in their careers, bridging underground and mainstream audiences. The venue has been a cultural hub for subcultures like hippies, punk, grunge, and hip hop.
