Finland's self-declared Capital of Metal also gave the world Manserock, a genre of Finnish-language rock that emerged in the 1970s when Tampere bands chose to sing in Finnish while their Helsinki counterparts performed in English. That distinction shaped a city now operating live music venues across every scale and register, from Nokia Arena, the largest indoor venue in Finland with a 15,000 capacity, down to Paapan kapakka, the only pub in the city offering live jazz seven days a week. Finland's first rock music magazines, Musa and Soundi, were both founded here, and the city has hosted Music x Media, considered the most important gathering for music professionals in the Nordic countries, since 1989. For anyone serious about Finnish music in particular, Tampere is not a detour but a destination.
