Few seaside towns can claim to have shaped British rock history the way Southend has. Procol Harum formed here in 1967, evolving out of the Southend-based Paramounts before recording "A Whiter Shade of Pale," one of the best-selling singles of all time. Decades later, The Horrors and These New Puritans emerged from the city's underground club scene of the early 2000s, while Nothing But Thieves have since carried the town's name onto international stages. The live infrastructure that sustains this tradition remains strong: Chinnerys draws touring acts to the high street, the Cliffs Pavilion handles larger productions, and grassroots venues like The Moonraker and The Railway Hotel keep the local circuit moving. From the pub rock era of the 1970s through to contemporary indie and experimental music, Southend has consistently produced more than its size would suggest.
