Few cities in Southeast Asia can claim a music culture as historically layered as Singapore's. The 1960s brought a localized pop movement called Pop Yeh-yeh, which swept the Malay-speaking world from 1965 to 1971, while homegrown Mandopop artists like JJ Lin and Stefanie Sun later carried Singaporean pop to audiences across Asia. Today, a well-developed indie scene, shaped by labels like Umami Records and KittyWu Records, runs alongside an annual Baybeats Festival that puts local alternative acts front and center. Live music venues range from the architecturally iconic Esplanade Theatres on the Bay, home to the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, to smaller rooms like Blu Jaz Cafe and Wala Wala Cafe and Bar, where original acts perform regularly. The infrastructure for live music here is serious, and so is the audience.
