Few capital cities of comparable size have produced a roster of globally recognised artists as concentrated as Reykjavik's: Björk, Sigur Rós, Of Monsters and Men, Laufey, and GusGus all trace their origins to this city. That creative density is not accidental. Since the 1980s, independent infrastructure has shaped the scene from the ground up, from Smekkleysa Records emerging out of the punk era to 12 Tónar operating as both record store and intimate performance space since 1998. The annual Iceland Airwaves festival, which began in a flight hangar in 1999 and now spreads across downtown venues every November, remains the clearest expression of the city's range, covering metal, jazz, indie folk, electronics, and experimental music within a single weekend. Harpa Concert Hall, Gamla Bíó, Mengi, and IÐNÓ give that range a permanent, year-round home.
