Bauhaus formed in Northampton in 1978 and recorded their influential single Bela Lugosi's Dead within weeks, establishing the band as pioneers of gothic rock. A strong reggae sound system scene operated in the town during the 1970s with regular events that attracted artists from Jamaica. Over fifty bands performed regularly in local pubs and clubs by the early 1980s. Current venues such as the 1000-capacity Roadmender host national tours across multiple genres, the Black Prince offers original music nights and tributes, the Picturedrome runs soul and Motown events, and the Royal and Derngate presents concerts by orchestras and established singers.
