The Capital of Mariachi earns that title with more than a catchy nickname. Guadalajara played a central role in popularizing mariachi beyond its Jalisco roots, and every September the International Mariachi and Charrería Festival draws musicians from across the world to celebrate that legacy at Plaza de los Mariachis. The city also gave the world Maná, Le Butcherettes, Belanova, and Troker, a Tapatío ensemble that fuses jazz with mariachi, mambo, and metal into something entirely its own. For live music today, the scale runs from the 8,000-capacity Auditorio Telmex down to mid-sized touring rooms like C3 Stage and converted spaces like La Mutualista, where rock, cumbia, and indie share the calendar. Jazz finds a dedicated home at Centro Cultural Breton, Cafetal 97, and El Maltés. The breadth of the live scene here is matched by few cities its size in Latin America.
