Live Music in Groningen

Every January, Groningen takes center stage as the host of Eurosonic Noorderslag, the festival that launched the careers of Calvin Harris, Dua Lipa, and Dutch acts like Racoon and Krezip before the wider world caught on. That role as a talent incubator runs deep here: VERA, a venue with roots stretching back to 1899, hosted U2, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam when they were still unsigned or unknown, and continues to champion emerging artists today. Simplon built its reputation as the definitive punk venue in the Netherlands during the 1980s and has since become the leading platform for hip-hop and electronic music in the north of the country. Add De Oosterpoort staging over 600 performances a year, and intimate spots like Eetcafé De Smederij running weekly jazz sessions for more than three decades, and Groningen consistently punches well above its size as a live music city.
