Few cities have lent their name to a genre and earned it as completely as Canterbury has. The Canterbury Sound, which crystallised in the late 1960s and early 1970s, blends jazz fusion, psychedelia, and avant-garde composition into something distinctly its own, characterised by extended improvisation, complex harmonies, and a strain of surreal English wit that marks it apart from broader progressive rock. Its lineage traces back to The Wilde Flowers, a group of Canterbury teenagers whose members went on to form Soft Machine and Caravan, the two bands most central to the movement's identity. That history still shapes the city today. Independent shops like Vinylstore Jr. stock Caravan and Soft Machine records alongside local releases, while venues including The Lady Luck, The Ballroom, The Penny Theatre, and The Gulbenkian Arts Centre keep a genuinely active live circuit running across rock, jazz, indie, and alternative.
