Leopold Mozart was born here in 1719, and the city has been building a musical identity ever since. Augsburg's contemporary live scene spans jazz at the Jazzclub Augsburg, which runs around 80 concerts annually alongside regular Friday and Saturday performances, through to electronic nights at Kesselhaus and the full classical and opera program at Staatstheater Augsburg, whose repertoire regularly draws on both Mozart and Bertolt Brecht, another Augsburg native. The indie underground has its own infrastructure too, with labels like Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten and In Gute Hände operating out of the city, and bands including The BV's working across indie pop, shoegaze, and krautrock. Augsburg also carries serious early music credentials, with a documented history of civic musicians stretching back to the fourteenth century and a Meistersinger tradition the research notes was the oldest such school in the Empire.
