The High-Back Chairs were formed in Washington, DC in 1989 by Jeff Nelson (drums and vocals, ex-Minor Threat and Three), Peter Hayes (vocals, guitar), Charles Steck (vocals, bass, ex-Velvet Monkees) and Jim Spellman (guitar, Velocity Girl). Their sound reflected a move away from the harder-edged underground music of their previous bands to more of a pop sensibility. The band played locally for the most part and released an LP Of Two Minds and an EP Curiosity & Relief on Jeff's Dischord Records.
