(b Bratislava, bap. 13 Feb 1660; d Dublin, Nov 1727). Composer of Hungarian parentage active in Germany, England and Ireland. After six years in Paris studying with Lully, his first significant post was as opera Kapellmeister at the Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel court (1690-94). A brief association with the Hamburg opera led him to form his own travelling opera company, but by 1700 he was Oberkapellmeister at the Stuttgart court.
