Few cities of Oxford's size have shaped modern rock so decisively. Radiohead, Supergrass, Ride, and Foals all formed here, between them defining alternative rock, Britpop, and shoegaze across three decades. That lineage still runs through the city's venues today. The Jericho Tavern, with a capacity of just 150, has become a landmark for emerging indie and folk acts, while the O2 Academy Oxford on Cowley Road brings national and international touring artists across three stages. For jazz, Sandy's Piano Bar and The Spin Jazz Club both offer regular live programming, and The Half Moon hosts traditional sessions alongside local talent on weekends. Sitting beneath all of this is a deeper musical history: the Holywell Music Room is considered the first purpose-built concert hall in Europe, a reminder that Oxford's relationship with live performance stretches back well over eight centuries.
