Few towns of Aberystwyth's size can claim to have launched an entire genre: Y Blew, founded here in 1967, became the first Welsh rock band, and the town has remained a focal point of the Welsh music scene ever since. That history still shapes the present, with UMCA, the university's Welsh Students' Union, actively preserving the legacy of Welsh language bands and hosting the annual Gwobrau'r Selar awards. The current venue landscape is genuinely varied, from The Bank Vault, a restored 200-year-old bank building hosting international touring acts and local Welsh talent, to the 960-seat concert hall at Aberystwyth Arts Centre. Homegrown acts including Mellt and Clwb Chess have carried the town's musical reputation outward, while the annual Aberystwyth Musicfest keeps the Arts Centre stage busy each summer with new and international work.
