Before either Andy Summers or Robert Fripp made their names elsewhere, both were playing together in the Majestic Dance Orchestra at Bournemouth's Majestic Hotel in the mid-1960s, a detail that quietly positions this coastal town as an unlikely incubator for some of British rock's most distinctive guitarists. That lineage runs deeper still, with John Wetton, Lee Kerslake, and Zoot Money all rooted in the local scene before moving on to larger stages. Today, the city sustains a working live circuit ranging from the O2 Academy Bournemouth and the Bournemouth International Centre down to intimate rooms like Canvas, Chaplin's and the Cellar Bar, and 60 Million Postcards, where indie and alternative nights draw committed local crowds. The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1893, remains the town's most enduring musical institution, anchoring a scene that has consistently produced more than its size would suggest.
