The Beatles filmed part of Magical Mystery Tour on Plymouth Hoe in 1967, a detail that captures something essential about this port city's place in live music history. Plymouth has since built a scene broad enough to sustain everything from the 170-capacity Underground, which anchors its punk and metal community, to Plymouth Pavilions, a 2,500-seat arena drawing major touring acts. Grassroots infrastructure runs deep: The Junction has hosted rock, reggae, indie, and folk for decades, while newer additions like The Depo, opened in 2021, reflect continued investment in the city's live circuit. Local acts including Crazy Arm, Windjammer, and The Monads have grown out of this ecosystem, supported in part by the Fightback Plymouth project, which since 2019 has worked alongside the Music Venues Trust to protect and promote the city's independent venues.
