Few cities of Hull's size can claim to have shaped British music across as many decades and genres as this port city on the Humber. Mick Ronson, the Hull-born guitarist whose work defined the Ziggy Stardust era, Roland Gift of Fine Young Cannibals, Paul Heaton of The Housemartins and The Beautiful South, and Norman Cook, later Fatboy Slim, all came up here. The city also helped define Hull Indie, a raw, DIY-driven blend of indie rock, punk, and post-punk with distorted guitars and driving rhythms. That same independent spirit runs through the current live scene, anchored by The New Adelphi Club, which has hosted early sets from Oasis, Radiohead, and Green Day across its 40-plus years, and Connexin Live, which draws major international acts. Polar Bear Music Club, The Welly Club, and Social round out a circuit that consistently punches above the city's weight.
