Few coastal towns have punched as hard as Blackpool when it comes to shaping British music. The Blackpool Mecca's Highland Room was one of the defining venues of the Northern Soul movement, drawing dancers and DJs to its floor from 1967 to 1979 and helping push rare soul into the national consciousness. The town also produced an unlikely roster of artists, from Jethro Tull and Chris Lowe of Pet Shop Boys to Robert Smith of The Cure. Today, the live scene runs from the grand scale of the Winter Gardens and Blackpool Tower Ballroom down to independent rooms like Bootleg Social, where rock, indie, and spoken word nights keep a loyal local crowd. Blackpool rewards the curious listener willing to look past the illuminations.
