The city that gave the world Tower Records, founded on its streets in 1960, has always taken music seriously. Sacramento's claim on rock history runs deep: the Deftones, Tesla, and Cake all formed here, and the city is credited with cultivating Sacramento Indie, a genre defined by melodic experimentation, unconventional instrumentation, and a DIY ethos. That independent spirit carries into the current live scene, which ranges from the 90-year-old Torch Club hosting blues six nights a week to the 2,150-capacity Channel 24, opened in 2025 to fill the gap between small clubs and major arenas. In between sit Ace of Spades, Old Ironsides, Harlow's, and The Side Door, a 100-seat listening room in Curtis Park that represents the intimate end of a scene with genuine range. Sacramento does not coast on nostalgia; it keeps building infrastructure around the music.
