Few American cities can claim a jazz legacy as concentrated as Pittsburgh's. The Hill District, nicknamed "Little Harlem," served as a crucible for bebop and hard bop from the 1920s through the early 1950s, producing or nurturing figures like Billy Strayhorn, Mary Lou Williams, Ahmad Jamal, and George Benson, all before Pittsburgh schools had established one of the earliest music curricula in the country. That foundation still shapes the city today. Con Alma and the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild's MCG Jazz Series keep the tradition active, while Stage AE, Mr. Smalls Theatre, and Spirit collectively cover everything from indie and experimental to rap and punk. Local labels like Rostrum Records, which broke both Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller, confirm that Pittsburgh's music output extends well beyond nostalgia. This is a city with genuine musical depth across multiple generations and genres.
