Once dubbed the "Motown of pop music," Orlando earned that reputation the hard way, serving as the literal launching pad for the Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, and O-Town through Lou Pearlman's Trans Continental Studios in the 1990s and early 2000s. That boy band legacy sits alongside a surprisingly heavy counterweight: Orlando also cultivated a recognized death metal scene and gave rise to Florida Breaks, a distinct breakbeat genre that spread outward from the area in the 1990s. Today the live circuit runs from intimate rooms like The Social and Will's Pub, where local acts build real followings, up through mid-size staples like The Beacham and The Vanguard, and into larger destinations including Hard Rock Live Orlando at Universal CityWalk and House of Blues Orlando at Disney Springs. The city plays more genres than its theme-park reputation suggests.
