Greece's second city carries serious musical weight, anchored by a history in Rebetiko that deepened dramatically after Greek refugees from Asia Minor arrived in 1922, bringing Eastern influences that transformed the city's sound. Vassilis Tsitsanis, though originally from Trikala, composed pivotal work here during the German Occupation, helping push Rebetiko toward the urban folk form known as laiko. That instinct for absorbing and reshaping genres continued into the 1980s and 1990s, when Thessaloniki's rock and punk scenes produced bands like Xylina Spathia and Tripes, with Koromila Street serving as a hub for the movement. Today, venues like Love Underground on Egnatia Street host blues, jazz, and soul, Block 33 draws crowds with its noted acoustics, and the Reworks Festival has brought over 1,300 electronic artists to the city since 2005.
