When the Sex Pistols played a tiny Penzance venue on September 1, 1977, it signalled something important: this far corner of Cornwall was not content to be ignored. That spirit has held. The Acorn on Parade Street remains the spine of the live scene, a 100-capacity independent arts centre with a reputation for programming folk, jazz, indie, and world music across West Cornwall. The Studio Bar on Bread Street offers free live entertainment seven nights a week, while The Farmers Arms on Causewayhead runs semi-acoustic nights and a Sunday open mic. Penzance has also produced credible artists of its own, most notably Thirteen Senses, whose debut album reached number 14 in the UK charts in 2005. The city's output spans punk, acoustic, bluegrass, and post-punk indie, reflecting a scene that has consistently punched beyond its size.
