The "scum" pseudo-genre, characterized by its naive and chaotic sound and deliberately set apart from the more polished output of Tokyo bands, is closely associated with this city, and Namba Bears has been its operational epicenter for over 30 years. Time Bomb Records, founded as a record shop in Amerika-mura in 1990 and expanded into a label a year later, gave formal infrastructure to Osaka's punk, rockabilly, and garage underground, releasing music by acts including The 5,6,7,8's. The city's venue infrastructure runs from Kyocera Dome Osaka at 55,000 capacity down to 120-seat rooms like Music Bar SINKAGURA. Specialist rooms serve nearly every underground genre: Hokage for metal and punk, Environment 0g for experimental electronic music, Nambaya for jazz and improvisation, and King Cobra as a long-standing punk anchor. Dir En Grey, Crossfaith, Shonen Knife, L'Arc-en-Ciel, and Loudness all originate from Osaka, placing the city at the source of some of Japan's most internationally recognized rock output.
