Live Music in Castlebar

Few towns of Castlebar's size can point to an international songwriting competition that once drew over 17,000 submissions worldwide, yet the Castlebar International Song Contest ran annually from 1966 to 1988, putting this County Mayo town on the map long before streaming algorithms existed. That ambition still shapes the live scene today. The TF Royal Theatre and Event Centre anchors the town as a serious venue for the west of Ireland, hosting major acts with capacity for up to 4,000 standing, while Garbos Live Music Venue and the newly opened Barrel and Castle keep weekend nights busy with live performances and tribute acts. Traditional Irish music runs deep here too, with regular sessions across numerous pubs and a lineage that includes flautist Emer Mayock and multi-instrumentalist John Hoban. Castlebar also claims two members of Fontaines D.C., Tom Coll and Conor Deegan, among its own.
