Cretan music, known locally as kritika, is considered the oldest folk tradition in Greece and possibly in Europe, and Heraklion sits at the center of it. The Cretan lyra, a three-stringed bowed instrument, remains the defining sound of the city, backed by the laouto and built around improvised mantinades, short rhyming verses passed down through generations. That tradition stays very much alive across venues like Taverna Bardis and To Tzertzelo, a family-run spot with recurring live Greek music nights, while the United Artists of Traditional Cretan Music, founded in 1981 and based in the city, continues to actively preserve and promote the form. The scene extends well beyond folk: Jailhouse Rock Bar, Rock N Rolling Stone Rock Bar, and the annual Over The Wall Festival address harder tastes, and the Heraklion Jazz Festival each autumn draws both local and international talent.
